The painting depics Dead vlei, a white clay pan located near the more famous salt pan of Sussusvlei in the southern part of the Namib desert of Namibia. Dead vlei has been claimed to be surrounded by the higest sand dunes in the world. The remaining skeletons of thorn trees, which are believed to have died 600 years ago, are now black because the intense sun has scorched them. The wood does not decompose because it is so dry.
